Champion of the Court

This classic drill is a favorite in tennis because it blends competition, strategy, and fun. It helps beginners practice singles tactics, consistency, and mental focus while learning to compete under pressure. The rotating “champion” format keeps players engaged and gives everyone multiple chances to step up and defend their spot.

Setup

  • One player starts as the Champion on one side of the court
  • At least three challengers line up on the opposite baseline
  • Singles court boundaries are used
  • One ball in play; additional balls available for quick feeds

Rules & Objectives

  • The first challenger begins the point by drop-hitting or serving the ball to the champion
  • The two players rally and play out the point
  • If the challenger wins, they take the champion’s spot and the former champion goes to the end of the line
  • If the champion wins, they stay on the court and the next challenger steps up
  • Continue rotating until all players have multiple turns as champion and challenger

Repetition

  • Standard version: challengers become champion by winning one point
  • Variation: require challengers to win 3 points in a row before taking over the champion’s spot
  • Doubles variation: play with two champions vs. two challengers, switching after each round
  • For more advanced groups, restrict play to specific strokes (e.g., only crosscourt rallies)

Coaching Points

  • Develops singles tactics and point construction
  • Builds competitive mindset in a fun environment
  • Improves consistency and pressure handling
  • Encourages quick adaptation against different opponents
