Capture the Net

This competitive game teaches players how to transition effectively from the baseline to the net and rewards successful net play. By using balls placed near the net as “tokens,” players earn the right to feed and stay at the net when they win points. The drill emphasizes aggressive play, passing shots, and volleys in a fun game-like format that keeps players engaged.

Setup

  • 2 players (can be run with rotations for larger groups)
  • Several balls placed on the ground next to the net on each side
  • Standard court and racquets
  • Coach feeds the first ball to start the game

Rules & Objectives

  • The coach begins by feeding a ball to either player to start a baseline rally
  • Whoever wins the rally earns the right to the net:That player picks up a ball from their side of the net
  • They drop-feed the next rally to the opponent at the baseline
  • If the baseline player wins the point with a passing shot, roles switch:The baseline player moves forward to the net
  • The net player retreats to the baseline
  • Play continues with this rotation until one player has collected all their side’s balls

Repetition

  • Continue rounds until all balls from one side of the net are gone
  • Play multiple games, switching initial feeders
  • Add scoring: 1 point per ball captured; first to 5 or 10 points wins
  • Progress by requiring net winners to finish with volleys only (no groundstroke winners)

Coaching Points

  • Trains players to transition forward aggressively
  • Reinforces net play and finishing volleys under pressure
  • Teaches baseline players to pass or lob effectively
  • Adds a fun, competitive scoring element that motivates improvement
