Call and Catch Game

This drill sharpens ball-tracking, reaction time, and catching skills, making it ideal for younger players learning hand-eye coordination. The surprise element of calling out a partner’s name keeps players alert and ready, while the one-bounce rule trains anticipation and timing. It’s a fun group game that also builds focus and communication.

Setup

  • Four players grouped into pairs (Team 1: Players 1 & 3, Team 2: Players 2 & 4)Open court space with a visible line (e.g., service line or baseline)One tennis ball per group

Rules & Objectives

  • One player (e.g., Player 4) tosses the ball high into the air, aiming for it to bounce on or near the target line
  • At the moment the ball bounces, the tosser calls out their partner’s name (e.g., “Player 2”)
  • The called player turns around and tries to catch the ball after a single bounce
  • Once the catch is made, roles switch: the catcher now becomes the tosser
  • Repeat the sequence so each player practices both tossing and catching

Repetition

  • Play in two lines facing away from the tosser to increase unpredictability
  • Move the target line closer to the catching player for added difficulty
  • For advanced progression, require catches with the non-dominant hand
  • Track successful catches in a row and set team records to beat

Coaching Points

  • Improves hand-eye coordination and ball-tracking
  • Builds anticipation and quick reactions
  • Encourages communication and listening skills
  • Keeps younger players engaged with a fun, game-like challenge
