Approach, Volley, and Overhead Sequence
This drill develops three essential attacking strokes in sequence: the approach shot, the volley, and the overhead smash. Players practice moving forward from the baseline, controlling the net, and finishing points with authority. It’s a fast-paced exercise that reinforces footwork, timing, and aggressive play—perfect for building the foundation of an offensive tennis game.
Setup
- Players form a line behind the baseline (max 4 to reduce waiting time)
- Coach stands on the opposite side near the service line with a basket of balls
- Open court space with optional target cones for placement practice
Rules & Objectives
- Player steps up to begin the sequence
- Feed 1: Coach feeds a deep approach shot ball
- Player hits it aggressively to a corner or with spin to move the opponent
- Feed 2: Coach feeds a volley
- Player moves forward, split-steps, and executes a controlled volley out front
- After the volley, player runs to touch the net with their racket
- Feed 3: Coach feeds a lob for an overhead
- Player backpedals, tracks the ball with their non-hitting hand, and hits an overhead smash
- After completing the sequence, the player exits to the side and rejoins the line
- Continue until all players rotate through multiple repetitions
Repetition
- Keep the line small (3–4 players) for high repetition and minimal downtime
- Add targets (cones) for approach and volley placement
- After the overhead, allow the player and coach to play out a quick point
- Increase feed difficulty (faster, higher, or wider balls) as players improve
Coaching Points
- Builds aggressive play with approach shots that set up net control
- Reinforces volley technique with proper split step and low body position
- Develops overhead consistency and confidence
- Trains smooth baseline-to-net transition and recovery movement
- Keeps intensity high while offering variety in shot-making
