Alternating Stroke Rally Drill

This drill challenges advanced players to sustain rallies while varying their shot selection and maintaining discipline in execution. By alternating between forehand and backhand shots, players are forced to improve footwork, anticipation, and adaptability. The structure prevents reliance on one stroke and builds rhythm under controlled restrictions. Variations add depth and difficulty, making this drill versatile for both practice rallies and competitive preparation.

Setup

  • Two players begin at the baseline
  • Rally starts with a cooperative feed

Rules & Objectives

  • Players rally while alternating strokes: no player may hit the same shot twice in a row (must switch between forehand and backhand)
  • Variation: players must hit two of the same stroke in succession (two forehands, then two backhands, and so on)
  • Another condition: all shots must land past the service line to emphasize depth
  • After practicing under restrictions, allow players to transition into competitive point play

Repetition

  • Begin with the alternating forehand/backhand rule for consistency
  • Progress to sequences of two consecutive same-side strokes
  • Add a depth requirement for advanced control
  • Finish sessions by removing restrictions and playing out full points

Coaching Points

  • Reinforces footwork, recovery, and readiness between strokes
  • Improves adaptability by forcing players to vary shot selection
  • Builds consistency and accuracy with both forehand and backhand
  • Enhances depth control and tactical discipline before attacking
