Alternating Crosscourt Game
This game-based drill develops control, accuracy, and footwork by having pairs rally crosscourt within restricted zones. Players alternate shots with their partners, creating a dynamic rally pattern that requires constant movement and coordination. The drill emphasizes consistent feeding, controlled trajectory, and situational awareness—making it valuable for both practice and warm-up. By adding restrictions such as “forehands only,” it also builds discipline and technique under pressure.
Setup
- Two players per side (four total)
- Markers or cones placed to restrict play to half-court crosscourt lanes
- Tennis balls and rackets
Rules & Objectives
- Player 1 (red) starts the rally crosscourt to Player 1 (black)
- After hitting, Player 1 rotates back while their partner (Player 2 red) prepares
- Player 1 (black) returns crosscourt, then rotates for Player 2 (black) to hit
- Rally continues with alternating hitters on each side, always crosscourt
- Players must stay within designated half-court zones
- Continue until an error occurs or until the coach stops the rally
Repetition
- Run rallies to a set number of points (e.g., play to 11 or 21)
- Restrict the game to forehands only; errors on backhands count as points for the opponent
- Later rounds allow both forehands and backhands
- Switch markers to the other side of the court so players practice from both wings
- Progress from restricted rallies to full point play within the same format
Coaching Points
- Trains accuracy and consistency in crosscourt shots
- Improves teamwork and communication with alternating hitters
- Builds footwork and positioning when rotating in and out
- Adds variety through restrictions, keeping players disciplined and engaged
