20-Ball Forehand Power

This drill reinforces footwork, positioning, and consistent shot-making by requiring the player to hit a series of fed balls in quick succession. The focus is on forehand power and depth, with players learning to maintain pace, placement, and control under pressure. It’s a great drill for developing aggressive groundstrokes and stamina, especially for young players who need repetition to build confidence.

Setup

  • Player starts at the baseline, in ready position
  • Coach/feeder positioned at the opposite baseline with a basket of balls
  • Optional target zones (cones or markers) placed deep in the court for accuracy

Rules & Objectives

  • Coach feeds 20 consecutive balls in quick succession to the player
  • Player must hit forehands only, moving around the backhand if necessary
  • Each shot should be struck with pace and depth, ideally landing beyond the service line
  • Continue until all 20 balls have been hit
  • If multiple players are present, rotate so each player completes the sequence

Repetition

  • Standard: 20 consecutive forehands
  • Variation: 3 sets of 10 balls to emphasize intensity with short rests
  • Add targets (cones, zones) to improve accuracy under pressure
  • Switch to backhand-only sequences for balance
  • For advanced players, alternate between forehand and backhand sets

Coaching Points

  • Reinforces aggressive groundstroke mechanics
  • Builds footwork discipline by requiring adjustment for every ball
  • Improves depth and accuracy under quick feeds
  • Conditions players to maintain intensity and focus over multiple repetitions
  • Provides high-volume practice for stamina and consistency
