Backhand–Forehand Line Drill
This drill develops strong groundstrokes by combining movement with alternating backhand and forehand execution. By requiring players to run, touch a marker, and then hit the ball down the line, the exercise trains both footwork and stroke mechanics. It keeps multiple players active at once, making it efficient for group training while reinforcing discipline in targeting shots. The focus on alternating sides builds the ability to transition quickly between backhand and forehand strokes under movement.
Setup
- Three to four players line up at the baseline
- A marker is placed to the side of the court for players to touch before hitting
- The coach stands ready to toss balls
- A target area is designated down the line for all shots
Rules & Objectives
- The first player runs from the middle of the baseline to the side and touches the marker
- Immediately after, the coach tosses a ball for the player to hit down the line, using either a forehand or backhand depending on positioning
- While the first player hits, the next player in line begins their movement to the marker
- A second ball is tossed for the next player, who also hits it down the line
- The rotation continues with each player running, touching the marker, and hitting their assigned shot before returning to the line
- Two players are active at the same time, keeping the drill continuous and fast-paced
Repetition
- Continue until each player has rotated through multiple turns
- Coaches may increase intensity by requiring faster movements or tighter target zones
Coaching Points
- Reinforces backhand and forehand groundstroke technique
- Trains footwork and endurance through constant movement
- Develops precision by requiring down-the-line targeting
- Keeps multiple players engaged simultaneously
