Alternating Forehand–Backhand Baseline Rally
This academy-style drill develops rhythm, footwork, and consistency by requiring players to alternate between forehand and backhand groundstrokes from the baseline. The constant change of side forces players to move efficiently and prepare early, making it an excellent warm-up or rally drill.
Setup
- Two players positioned on opposite baselines
- Rally is restricted to down-the-line shots (or crosscourt in a variation)
Rules & Objectives
- Players rally cooperatively from the baseline
- Each shot must alternate: one forehand, then one backhand
- Players focus on quick recovery and side-to-side footwork
- Continue the rally for as long as possible without breaking the sequence
Repetition
- Begin with cooperative rallies to establish rhythm
- Track rally length and compare with other pairs for competition
- Variation 1: Perform the same drill crosscourt
- Variation 2: Add scoring (e.g., longest rally wins)
Coaching Points
- Builds strong footwork and recovery habits
- Improves consistency in alternating groundstrokes
- Reinforces balance and preparation on both wings
- Creates rhythm for warm-up before a session or match
