Two-Racket Figure Eight
This unique coordination drill challenges players to use both hands while combining footwork, balance, and timing. By alternating between forehand and backhand swings with rackets in each hand, players strengthen bilateral coordination and body control. The figure-eight footwork pattern adds movement discipline, while the hand toss feed requires quick reactions. This drill is especially useful for building overall coordination and agility in young or developing players.
Setup
- Player holds a racket in each hand
- Cones/markers placed to guide a figure-eight movement pattern
- Coach stands near the T-line (or closer) with a basket of balls for hand toss feeds
Rules & Objectives
- Coach hand tosses a ball to one side of the player
- Player moves around the marker, follows the figure-eight path, and strikes the ball with the right-hand racket
- Player continues through the figure-eight, preparing for the next toss
- Coach tosses a second ball, which the player strikes with the left-hand racket
- Alternate right- and left-hand swings with each new toss, continuing the figure-eight movement
- Drill repeats until the coach stops or basket is empty
Repetition
- Begin with slower, controlled tosses; increase speed as coordination improves
- Add directional targets (down the line or crosscourt)
- Require quicker footwork through the figure-eight before striking
- Time-based competition: number of successful alternating hits in 1–2 minutes
Coaching Points
- Improves hand-eye coordination and bilateral racket control
- Reinforces footwork discipline through figure-eight patterns
- Enhances reaction time with quick alternation between hands
- Builds balance, agility, and rhythm
- Encourages players to focus on the primary drill goal (coordination before power)
