Two-Man Suicide Doubles Drill
This doubles drill focuses on teamwork, spacing, and reflexes at the net. By forcing two net players to handle a variety of feeds, including low balls, lobs, and hard shots, the exercise simulates the fast decision-making required in real doubles play. The emphasis is on covering open space when a partner is pulled off the court and quickly recovering to proper positioning.
Setup
- Two players positioned on the service line (same side of the court)
- One feeder on the opposite baseline with a basket of balls
- Optional cones to mark spacing and coverage zones
Rules & Objectives
- The feeder hits a sequence of 10–15 balls to the two net players, mixing low balls, lobs, and faster feeds
- Net players react, volleying balls back while maintaining proper spacing
- If one net player is pulled wide, the other pinches in to cover the middle
- After the wide player recovers, both return to their original positions
- Rotate roles after 10–15 feeds so each player practices as a net player and feeder
Repetition
- Continue for 10–15 minutes, rotating clockwise so all players experience different roles
- Increase the pace or difficulty of feeds to challenge reaction time
- Add scoring (e.g., 1 point for every successful volley returned in play)
- Progress to live doubles points after the feed sequence
Coaching Points
- Develops doubles positioning, spacing, and communication
- Improves reflexes and volleying under pressure
- Reinforces the habit of covering open space when a partner is pulled wide
- Builds stamina and coordination for net play in doubles matches
