Two-Ball Feeding Drill
This advanced drill develops forehand and backhand accuracy, movement, and consistency. Players practice responding to two consecutive feeds: one deep ball from the baseline, followed by a shorter ball that requires moving forward. The sequence reinforces proper footwork, shot placement, and preparation for both rally and attacking situations.
Setup
- Maximum of 3 players at the baseline, rotating after each sequence
- Coach feeds two balls to each player in sequence
- Targets can be marked for crosscourt or down-the-line shots
Rules & Objectives
- Player 1 begins at the baseline
- Coach feeds the first ball deep; the player hits a forehand or backhand crosscourt (variation: down the line)
- Coach feeds a shorter ball; the player moves forward and hits inside-out crosscourt or an approach shot
- Player recovers to the baseline, and the next player begins
- Repeat with forehands and then with backhands
Repetition
- Continue until each player completes multiple forehand and backhand rounds
- Add variations:
- First ball down the line, second ball crosscourt
- Second ball used as an approach shot with optional volley
- Increase difficulty by feeding wider or faster balls
Coaching Points
- Improves accuracy on both deep and short feeds
- Builds footwork and balance when transitioning forward
- Develops topspin control and consistency
- Trains players to recognize and attack short balls effectively
