Turn-and-React Drill

Quick reactions are essential in tennis, as even a slight delay can determine whether a player successfully returns the ball. This drill develops speed, alertness, and the ability to adapt instantly to the coach’s signal. By beginning with their back turned, the player must rely purely on reaction rather than anticipation, creating a match-like challenge. Practicing this drill regularly helps players sharpen their reflexes and build confidence under pressure.

Setup

  • The player begins at the baseline, facing the fence with their back to the coach
  • The coach stands on the opposite side of the court with balls ready to feed

Rules & Objectives

  • The coach calls “go
  • The player quickly turns around to face the court
  • The coach feeds the first ball, and the player reacts and hits it
  • Immediately after, the coach feeds a second ball to the opposite side
  • The player moves across and returns the second shot
  • The player resets by turning back toward the fence and preparing for the next round

Repetition

  • Repeat the sequence for multiple rounds
  • The coach may vary the direction or timing of feeds to increase difficulty

Coaching Points

  • Improves reaction speed, agility, and decision-making
