Toss, Hit, and Catch Game

This fun team-based drill introduces kids to rallying concepts while reinforcing hand-eye coordination and ball tracking. By combining tossing, hitting, and catching, it gives players of different levels an active role while keeping the game playful. The cone-catching element keeps kids engaged and helps them anticipate the ball’s bounce.

Setup

  • Groups of three players per team
  • One racket, one cone, and one tennis ball per group
  • Mini court or half-court space

Rules & Objectives

  • Player 1 underhand tosses the ball over the net to Player 2
  • Player 2 lets the ball bounce once, then hits it back across the net with their racket
  • Player 3 allows the ball to bounce once more, then tries to catch it in their cone
  • If successful, the team earns one point
  • Rotate roles so each player practices tossing, hitting, and catching

Repetition

  • Continue rounds for 2–3 minutes, then compare scores between groups
  • Make it harder by narrowing the court space or requiring Player 2 to hit to a specific target area
  • For advanced groups, add two cones on each side so catchers must move to intercept
  • Increase the speed of play by encouraging quicker tosses and returns

Coaching Points

  • Develops hand-eye coordination and tracking skills
  • Reinforces underhand tossing and controlled hitting
  • Introduces anticipation and bounce timing
  • Provides cooperative teamwork in a fun, game-like setting
