Three-Ball Approach and Volley Drill

This drill trains players to transition from baseline approach shots into controlled volleys and finishing drop volleys. Players practice a three-ball sequence that develops forward movement, directional control, and touch at the net. By alternating sides, players reinforce balance and consistency on both forehand and backhand patterns.

Setup

  • Players line up behind the baseline
  • Coach stands with a basket of balls to feed three consecutive shots
  • Drill runs first from the deuce side, then from the ad side

Rules & Objectives

  • Coach feeds the first ball. Player hits an approach shot down the line
  • Coach feeds the second ball. Player moves forward and hits a deep volley down the line
  • Coach feeds the third ball. Player finishes with a crosscourt drop volley
  • Player exits to the side and rejoins the line
  • Next player repeats the sequence
  • After all players complete the deuce side, switch to the ad side and repeat
