Tennis Serve Motion Practice

This drill focuses on developing proper serve motion, particularly wrist snap, pronation, and follow-through. By creating a target goal of hitting the back fence after one bounce in the service box, players are encouraged to generate spin and power with correct technique. It also adds a competitive element by giving baseline players the task of preventing the ball from reaching the fence.

Setup

  • Four players (two doubles pairs)
  • One pair positioned at the service line on one side of the court
  • One pair positioned at the baseline on the opposite side
  • Tennis balls and standard court

Rules & Objectives

  • Players at the service line serve into the service box, aiming for the ball to bounce once and then reach the back fence
  • Baseline players attempt to intercept and stop the ball before it hits the fence
  • Servers focus on wrist snap, pronation, and proper weight transfer
  • Switch serving and defending roles after a set number of attempts or points

Repetition

  • Award points for each serve that successfully clears to the back fence
  • Move servers slightly farther back to increase difficulty
  • Require different serve types (flat, slice, kick, twist)
  • Progress to full baseline serving once players demonstrate correct motion

Coaching Points

  • Reinforces correct serve motion, wrist snap, and pronation
  • Builds spin and power generation
  • Improves accuracy and control under pressure
  • Adds fun competition between serving and defending teams
