Team Throw & Catch Race
This energetic relay game is a great warm-up for both kids and adults. Players practice tossing, catching, and teamwork while racing against the clock to cycle their whole team across the court. By varying throws and ball types, the drill keeps everyone active, engaged, and working on coordination and communication.
Setup
- Divide players into two or more teams
- Teams line up behind the baseline on one side of the court
- The first player in each line has two balls
- Teammates line up opposite, across the court
Rules & Objectives
- The first player in line throws both balls (one after the other) to their teammate across the court
- Once both balls are controlled by the receiving player, the thrower runs across and joins the back of that line
- The receiving player then becomes the thrower, tossing the balls back to the next teammate
- The process continues until all players have rotated and returned to their starting side
- The first team to cycle all players back wins
Repetition
- Adjust distance between teams to increase difficulty
- Use different throws: overhand, underhand, or sidearm
- Require players to throw once with their dominant hand, once with their non-dominant hand
- Swap in different types of balls (foam, larger, or smaller) for variety
- Run multiple rounds for best two-out-of-three winners
Coaching Points
- Builds throwing and catching coordination
- Improves teamwork and communication
- Develops bilateral motor skills by using both dominant and non-dominant hands
- Provides a fun, competitive warm-up for groups
