Target Knockdown Warm-Up

This fun warm-up game helps kids practice throwing skills while simulating the motion of a tennis serve. By aiming to knock tennis balls off cones across the net, players work on coordination, accuracy, and overhead movements in a playful, competitive format. It’s an excellent introduction to serving mechanics for younger players.

Setup

  • Split players into two teams, lined up on opposite service lines
  • Cones or markers set up on each side of the net with tennis balls balanced on top
  • One basket of balls placed near each team for quick access

Rules & Objectives

  • On the coach’s signal, the first player from each team picks up a ball
  • Using an overhand throw (like a service motion), the player aims to knock a tennis ball off a cone on the opposite side
  • After throwing, the player returns to the back of the line and the next player steps up
  • Continue until one team has knocked down all their target balls

Repetition

  • Play multiple rounds to give every player several throws
  • Move cones farther away to increase difficulty
  • Rearrange targets (some closer, some farther back) to vary challenges
  • Emphasize proper throwing mechanics—non-throwing hand pointing to the target, throwing arm starting behind the ear

Coaching Points

  • Introduces serving motion in a fun, simplified way
  • Improves hand-eye coordination and aim
  • Builds accuracy, power, and overhead mechanics
  • Encourages teamwork and competitive spirit
