Tap-Back Volley Drill

This simple partner drill introduces children to the basics of volleying in a fun and approachable way. By working at close distance and focusing on short, controlled taps, kids learn to keep the racket out front, use proper grip, and return the ball with accuracy. The cooperative format makes it ideal for beginners and young players building confidence at the net.

Setup

  • Players in pairs, standing 5–7 feet apart
  • One player with a racket, the other with a ball
  • Foam or low-pressure balls recommended

Rules & Objectives

  • Player with the ball gently tosses it underhand to their partner with the racket
  • The racket player uses a short, controlled volley motion to tap the ball back
  • The thrower catches the ball cleanly for the pair to score one point
  • Repeat for multiple tosses, alternating forehand and backhand volleys
  • Switch roles after a set time or number of attempts

Repetition

  • Play competitively: first pair to complete 20 successful tap-backs wins
  • Vary toss heights (low, medium, high)
  • Use overhand tosses to simulate faster feeds
  • Narrow the target area for more challenge

Coaching Points
