Stop-and-Go Target Game
This drill is designed for 10 and under players to build control, accuracy, and rally awareness in a fun, game-like format. Using age-appropriate courts and targets, kids practice self-serving and aiming at designated spots while competing to score points. It develops focus, precision, and adaptability with simple variations.
Setup
- Age-appropriate mini courts set up within a regular court
- Targets (cones or markers) placed on each side of the net
- Foam or low-pressure balls
- Players paired on opposite sides of the court
Rules & Objectives
- First player self-serves or toss-hits the ball from their side of the court
- The goal is to hit the target area on the opponent’s side
- The opponent retrieves the ball, self-serves back, and tries to hit their target
- Each successful target hit scores a point
- Continue until one player reaches the agreed score (e.g., 5 or 11)
- After a game, switch pairings and/or move targets to new positions
Repetition
- Play multiple short games with score goals (5 or 11)
- Change target positions after each round
- Restrict shots to only forehands or only backhands
- Use different types of balls (foam, low-compression, red/orange balls) for variety
