Singles Game-Opening Drill
This drill develops natural point-starting patterns for singles play. Players practice opening rallies with either crosscourt exchanges or a crosscourt-to-down-the-line combination before playing out the point.
Setup
- Coach serves the ball to begin the point
- Two players positioned on opposite baselines
Rules & Objectives
- Coach serves the ball to either side (forehand or backhand)
- Option 1: Player A hits crosscourt → Player B responds crosscourt → play out the point
- Option 2: Player A hits crosscourt → Player B responds down the line → play out the point
- Coach can vary the feed by adding spin, height, or placement to create different starting scenarios
Repetition
- Alternate between the two opening patterns
- Add conditions, such as requiring topspin or targeting specific zones
- Increase difficulty by varying ball height and pace on the coach’s feed
Coaching Points
- Trains realistic game-opening patterns for singles
- Reinforces crosscourt control and the tactical use of down-the-line shots
- Improves adaptability against different feeds and spin types
