Short Ball Recognition Drill
This drill builds consistency in deep groundstrokes while training players to recognize and react to short balls. By rallying cooperatively from the baseline, players learn to maintain depth and height, which reinforces strong shot placement and minimizes errors. When a ball lands short in the service box, the receiver transitions forward to the net while the rally continues. This pattern develops both baseline endurance and net-play adaptability, helping players sharpen their all-court game.
Setup
- Two players start on opposite baselines
- The rally begins with cooperative groundstrokes aimed at the back half of the court
- If a ball lands short in the service box, the receiver must move forward to the net
Rules & Objectives
- Players rally from the baseline, aiming to keep the ball deep
- When a ball lands short, the receiver immediately approaches the net
- From that point, the rally continues with one player at the net and the other at the baseline
- Players maintain positions (one at net, one at baseline) until the rally ends
- Reset and repeat, alternating roles naturally as short balls occur
Repetition
- Begin with cooperative rallies focused on consistency
- Progress by playing out points competitively once the transition occurs
- Add variations, such as restricting play to crosscourt or including doubles alleys
Coaching Points
- Builds groundstroke depth and consistency
- Trains players to recognize short balls and transition forward effectively
- Strengthens footwork, net clearance, and ready position
- Develops adaptability between baseline and net play
