Service-Box Slice Game

This competitive drill focuses on developing touch, control, and slice technique. Players rally and play points using only slice shots inside the service boxes, forcing them to keep the ball low and use angles effectively.

Setup

  • Two players face each other, restricted to one or both service boxes
  • Each rally is played out as a competitive point

Rules & Objectives

  • Players start a rally inside the service boxes
  • Condition: Every shot must be a slice (no flat or topspin strokes allowed)
  • Shots must bounce once before being returned
  • Players aim to keep the ball low and use wide angles to move their opponent
  • Play out points to a set score (e.g., first to 7 or 11)

Repetition

  • Play several rounds, rotating pairs if more players are waiting
  • Variation 1: Restrict play to a single service box for added difficulty
  • Variation 2: Advanced version—require volleys only, with no bounce allowed

Coaching Points

  • Improves slice control and touch
  • Reinforces keeping the ball low with under-spin
  • Teaches players to create angles and move opponents around the court
  • Adds variety and creativity to practice sessions
