Serve and Return Accuracy Drill
This drill is designed for younger or developing players to establish rhythm and technique on the first two shots of a rally: the serve and the return. By simplifying play to just the serve and return, players can focus on execution without the pressure of extended point play. The scoring system rewards accuracy and consistency, helping players build confidence in starting points correctly.
Setup
- Four players (two teams of two)
- Standard or age-appropriate tennis court
- Balls and racquets
- Players 1 and 4 are servers; players 2 and 3 are returners
Rules & Objectives
- Player 1 serves diagonally into the service box to Player 2
- Player 2 attempts a clean crosscourt return
- If both shots are successful, that team earns 1 point
- On the opposite side, Player 4 serves to Player 3 with the same sequence
- No further rally is played—only the serve and return are counted
- Rotate servers and returners after a set number of rounds
Repetition
- Play to a set score (e.g., first team to 10 points)
- Require servers to alternate between first and second serve styles
- Have returners aim for specific target zones (deep crosscourt, body, etc.)
- Progress to playing out the point after the serve and return once consistency improves
Coaching Points
- Reinforces correct serving mechanics and toss placement
- Builds confidence and consistency on the return of serve
- Develops rhythm on the opening two shots
- Creates a fun, team-based competitive environment for younger players
