Second Serve & Crosscourt Return Drill
This drill emphasizes the importance of consistent serving and returning, the two most crucial shots to start a point. By practicing controlled second serves and steady crosscourt returns, players develop rhythm and reliability without the pressure of going for winners. The exercise creates a solid foundation for point play by reinforcing consistency and timing on the opening shots.
Setup
- Four players: two servers (positions 1 and 2) and two returners (positions 3 and 4)
- Standard tennis court and balls
- Servers start on opposite baselines; returners position crosscourt
Rules & Objectives
- Players 1 and 2 serve easy second serves crosscourt to players 3 and 4
- Returners hit the ball back crosscourt to the same server
- The server collects the ball and repeats the sequence
- Continue with steady rhythm—no emphasis on speed or power
- Rotate server/returner roles after a set time or number of repetitions
Repetition
- Extend the rally beyond the return (e.g., play 2–3 controlled shots after the serve)
- Increase pace or add spin to the serve once players are consistent
- Have returners focus on different placements: deep middle, sharp angle, or body return
- Progress to playing out points starting with the serve and return
Coaching Points
- Reinforces consistency on second serves
- Builds confidence in returning controlled serves
- Helps players find rhythm on the opening shots
- Establishes timing and positioning for serve and return situations
