Red Light, Green Light Movement Game
This warm-up drill is a fun and versatile way to get kids moving before tennis practice. By using “red light, green light” style commands, kids practice different movements while developing coordination, balance, and awareness of space. It keeps them active, engaged, and comfortable moving with or without a racket.
Setup
- Singles court space
- Coach in the middle of the court
- Kids spread out across one side of the court
- Optional: rackets or balls for balance activities
Rules & Objectives
- Coach gives movement commands, such as “run fast,” “jog slow,” or “freeze
- ”Players move around the singles court space, avoiding bumping into each other
- Variations include:Side shufflesBackwards runningBunny hopsGiant stepsWindmill arm circlesHopping on one footBalancing on one footOccasionally call “stop” to freeze all movement before restarting
- Encourage players to use the full court, not cluster in one area
Repetition
- Run for timed rounds (e.g., 2–3 minutes)
- Add challenges such as balancing a ball on the racket while moving
- Alternate commands quickly to improve reaction speed
- Add playful competitions (e.g., last player to freeze is out)
