Progressive Crosscourt-to-Line Drill

This progressive drill helps players improve consistency, placement, and control by alternating crosscourt shots with down-the-line finishes. It is structured so the number of crosscourt rallies increases each sequence before the player changes direction. This forces focus on rhythm and accuracy while also training the ability to break a rally pattern with a well-placed down-the-line shot. The drill can be repeated on both sides of the court to balance forehand and backhand practice, making it effective for players of all levels.

Setup

  • Coach stands ready to feed balls
  • Player begins at the baseline
  • Drill is repeated from both forehand and backhand sides

Rules & Objectives

  • Coach feeds the first ball crosscourt
  • Player rallies one crosscourt shot, then hits the next ball down the line
  • Next sequence: two crosscourt shots followed by a down-the-line shot
  • Continue with three crosscourt shots followed by a down-the-line shot
  • Extend to four crosscourt shots before finishing down the line
  • Repeat the same progression from the opposite side of the court

Repetition

  • Start with short sequences (1–2 crosscourts) before lengthening to 3–4
  • Emphasize accuracy and consistency over speed
  • Repeat the drill multiple times on both forehand and backhand sides

Coaching Points

  • Builds rhythm and consistency in crosscourt rallies
  • Improves accuracy in switching direction with a down-the-line finish
  • Strengthens footwork and shot preparation
  • Reinforces tactical awareness by teaching when to change direction
