Over-the-Net Throwing Game
This drill is an energetic game designed to keep kids active and engaged while learning the basics of rallying and court awareness. Starting with throwing balls over the net, it gradually transitions into hitting with rackets. The game encourages movement, teamwork, and coordination, while keeping the competitive aspect light and fun.
Setup
- Divide players into two teams, one on each side of the net
- 10 balls per side (foam balls, low-compression balls, or standard tennis balls depending on age/skill)
- Clear service line and baseline boundaries marked
Rules & Objectives
- Place an equal number of balls on each side of the court
- On the coach’s command, players throw balls over the net, trying to land them in the opponent’s court
- Players may only throw from behind the service line (or baseline for older kids)
- If a ball lands in the service box, it must first be picked up, then carried behind the service line before being thrown
- After 1–2 minutes of play, stop and count how many balls remain on each side
- The team with the fewest balls on their side wins the round
Repetition
- Play multiple rounds, switching up the throwing technique (overhand, underhand, or sidearm)
- Vary the size/type of balls to match age and skill
- For advanced progression, replace throwing with racket hits—players must roll or hit balls over the net while staying behind the service line or baseline
- Increase round length as players improve
Coaching Points
- Builds court awareness and movement fundamentals
- Develops throwing and striking coordination (precursor to racket use)
- Encourages teamwork and communication
- Provides a fun introduction to competition in tennis lessons
