No-Net Error Baseline Game
This drill develops baseline consistency and patience by heavily penalizing net errors. Players focus on maintaining height and depth on their shots, building a reliable rhythm from the backcourt. The scoring system encourages margin for error and disciplined groundstroke play.
Setup
- Four players on court: two pairs rallying on each half (singles side or including doubles alleys)
- Play starts from the baseline
Rules & Objectives
- Players rally and play out points from the baseline
- Condition: No drop shots or volleys allowed—groundstrokes only
- If a player hits into the net, the opponent automatically earns 3 points
- All other points are scored normally (1 point for a rally win)
- Play continues until one player reaches 7 points (or to a coach-designated total)
Repetition
- Start with singles half-court to simplify
- Add doubles alleys for a larger playing area
- Later, allow drop shots and volleys once baseline consistency improves
Coaching Points
- Reinforces consistency and patience in baseline rallies
- Encourages players to clear the net with added margin (higher net clearance)
- Builds rhythm and confidence in groundstrokes
- Creates competitive conditions that simulate match pressure
