Net Approach with Split Step
This drill trains players to transition effectively from the service line to the net, emphasizing the split step, racquet preparation, and solid volley technique. By starting with an underarm feed and requiring players to move forward over a cone or marker before engaging in point play, the drill builds habits for timing and movement while reinforcing fundamentals of net play.
Setup
- 4 players: 2 at the service line, 2 at the baseline
- Place a cone or marker just inside the service court for timing the split step
- Standard racquets and balls
Rules & Objectives
- Service-line player begins with an underarm feed to the opposite baseline player
- Immediately after feeding, the service-line player moves forward, making a split step over the cone
- The rally is now live, and the point is played out competitively
- After a set (e.g., first to 11 points), switch roles: service-line players move to baseline and vice versa
Repetition
- Cooperative variation: Instead of competitive points, players rally six controlled shots after the feed, focusing on consistency before resetting
- Crosscourt variation: Run the same drill diagonally to practice different angles
- Increase intensity by requiring the net player to finish points within three shots
- Rotate frequently so all players practice both baseline and net roles
Coaching Points
- Reinforces proper volley technique: firm wrist, bent knees, contact in front
- Builds footwork habits, especially timing of the split step
- Improves transition skills from service line to net
- Encourages aggressive, point-winning net play while maintaining control
