Midcourt Winner Drill
This drill keeps large groups active while training players to attack short, high feeds from the coach. Players move quickly through a rotation, hitting either crosscourt or down-the-line winners from the midcourt area. The continuous format builds timing, positioning, and confidence when finishing points inside the baseline.
Setup
- Group of 4–10 players
- Players line up behind the baseline
- The coach stands at the T-line in the service box with a basket of balls
Rules & Objectives
- The coach feeds a high ball into the service box
- The first player moves in, attacks the ball crosscourt or down the line, and exits to the side
- The coach immediately feeds the next ball to the opposite side for the next player
- The sequence continues left to right with quick rotation
- Progression: Start players at the baseline and require them to move forward, taking the ball out of the air when possible
Repetition
- Continue until all players cycle through multiple turns
- Increase difficulty by varying feed height and placement
- Require volleys or swing volleys on advancing feeds
Coaching Points
- Trains players to attack short, high balls effectively
- Improves footwork and movement into midcourt
- Builds confidence in finishing shots inside the baseline
- Keeps large groups active with minimal waiting time
