Magic Ball & Diamond Ball Relay

This engaging relay-style game for kids combines teamwork, accuracy, and fun competition. Players earn “magic balls” by successfully hitting “diamond balls” over the net into the correct court. The visual use of hoppers and ball movement keeps kids motivated, while also helping them practice groundstrokes, serving motions, and consistent hitting under simple conditions.

Setup

  • Two teams of players lined up at the baseline
  • One hopper of diamond balls at the baseline (shared by both teams)
  • Two hoppers of magic balls, placed at each net post
  • Foam or low-pressure balls recommended

Rules & Objectives

  • First player on each team takes a diamond ball from the baseline hopper
  • Player drop-hits or self-serves the ball over the net
  • If the ball lands in the court, the player runs to the net hopper and collects a magic ball, then hands it to the next teammate
  • If the ball misses, the player instead collects another ball from the baseline hopper and passes it to the next teammate to continue
  • The next player repeats the sequence
  • Teams continue until all magic balls have been collected from the net hoppers
  • The team that collects all their magic balls first wins

Repetition

  • Adjust the number of magic balls for shorter or longer games
  • Require specific shots: forehands only, backhands only, serves, or volleys
  • Allow or disallow one bounce before the shot
  • Add target zones (e.g., ball must land in the service box or deep court)

Coaching Points

  • Reinforces consistency and control when hitting over the net
  • Encourages teamwork and relay-style play
  • Builds accuracy by requiring balls to land in defined areas
  • Makes scoring and progress visible and fun for kids
