Lobs vs. Overheads Doubles Game
This doubles-based drill creates a competitive environment where players practice overhead smashes under pressure, while opponents work on hitting effective lobs. The setup ensures frequent overhead opportunities, encourages communication, and simulates realistic match play situations. Both baseline and net players develop skills critical for doubles strategy.
Setup
- Two doubles pairs (4 players total)
- One player from each team positioned in the service box
- One player from each team positioned at the baseline
- Full doubles court in play
Rules & Objectives
- Baseline players are restricted to hitting only lobs
- Service-box players are restricted to hitting only overhead smashes
- Teams play competitive points under these conditions
- Emphasize calling for the ball and communicating between partners
- After several points or minutes, switch roles so all players practice both lobs and overheads
Repetition
- Variation: Require baseline players to hit only crosscourt lobs
- Variation: Require net players to hit only crosscourt overheads
- Extend to scoring format (e.g., play to 7 or 11 points)
- Add spin or trajectory challenges for lobbers to increase difficulty
Coaching Points
- Improves overhead technique and execution under pressure
- Develops lob accuracy and defensive shot-making
- Reinforces doubles communication and teamwork
- Simulates real match dynamics between aggressive net play and defensive lobbing
