Line-to-Line Accuracy Challenge
This cooperative volley drill focuses on precision, touch, and control by requiring players to hit volleys that land exactly on specific court lines before progressing to the next stage. Starting close in the service box, players gradually move backward as their accuracy improves. The game-like challenge makes it ideal for developing soft hands, consistency, and placement under pressure.
Setup
- 2 players
- Start in the service box, positioned near the outer doubles alley lines
- Tennis balls and racquets
Rules & Objectives
- Players begin a cooperative volley rally, keeping the ball in play
- They can only move forward (or inward) to the next line when a ball lands directly on the designated line:First, outer doubles alley line
- Then, service box center line
- Then progress inward toward the middle
- Rally continues with the goal of advancing step by step until reaching the final target line
- Emphasize soft hands, control, and a stable stance throughout the drill
Repetition
- Start close at the service box; gradually move the rally back toward the mid-court or baseline for advanced players
- Add a variation requiring players to alternate forehand and backhand volleys each shot
- Set challenges: e.g., complete 3 successful “line hits” in a row before moving back
- For more advanced groups, allow competitive scoring where the first player to hit all target lines wins
Coaching Points
- Trains volley precision and touch
- Develops soft hands and controlled racquet work
- Reinforces proper footwork, balance, and positioning at the net
- Builds accuracy progression from close-range volleys to deeper exchanges
