Inside-Out Attacking Forehand
This drill develops the inside-out forehand as a weapon by teaching players to run around the backhand and strike a powerful forehand from an aggressive position. Using a cone as a movement marker, players practice footwork, preparation, and shot placement before transitioning into live point play. The drill builds tactical awareness by training players to recognize when to attack with the inside-out forehand and how to control direction against an opponent.
Setup
- Players line up at the baseline, one side of the court
- Place a cone on the baseline near the doubles alley to mark the movement path
- Coach positioned with a basket of balls to feed
- Singles or doubles court (depending on preference)
Rules & Objectives
- Coach feeds a ball to the player’s backhand side
- Player runs around the cone to their left or right, positioning for an inside-out forehand
- Player hits a strong forehand (target crosscourt or down the line as instructed)
- After the first shot, the rally becomes live, and the point is played out
- Once the point ends, players rotate back to their positions and the next player steps in
- After a set time, switch sides so all players practice from both wings
Repetition
- Continue until each player has completed multiple forehands from each side
- For intermediate players, allow freedom of shot direction
- For advanced players, assign specific targets (e.g., deep crosscourt, sharp angle, or down the line)
- Progress to include inside-out backhands as an alternative variation
- Run timed competitive games (e.g., first player to win 7 points)
Coaching Points
- Trains inside-out forehand footwork and movement around the cone
- Builds power and accuracy in attacking forehands
- Enhances decision-making on when to change direction or attack
- Reinforces point construction by transitioning into live rallies
- Develops a versatile offensive weapon to surprise opponents
