Indoor Pattern-to-Point Drill

This drill uses a structured rally sequence to prepare players for live point play. Players begin by following a set pattern of crosscourt and down-the-line shots, focusing on control and consistency rather than aggression. Once the sequence is completed, the point becomes live and is played out competitively. The format emphasizes disciplined rallying, smooth transitions, and point construction.

Setup

  • Two players start at the baseline
  • Additional players wait on the sideline and rotate in after each round
  • The coach feeds the first ball to begin the sequence

Rules & Objectives

  • The coach feeds the opening ball to Player 1
  • Players follow the sequence: crosscourt → crosscourt → down the line → crosscourt → crosscourt → down the line
  • After the final down-the-line shot (seventh ball), the point becomes live
  • Players play out the rally under normal scoring
  • If a player misses during the sequence, the opponent earns 1 point
  • The winner of the live point earns 2 points
  • Rotate players after each mini-game to three points

Repetition

  • Switch who starts the sequence so both players practice initiating from forehand and backhand sides
  • Play to a set score (e.g., first to 3 points) before rotating new players in
  • Emphasize completion of the sequence as a shared goal, not as a contest

Coaching Points

  • Reinforces control and discipline in rally patterns
  • Trains players to transition from controlled drills to competitive points
  • Improves consistency on both forehand and backhand sides
  • Builds point-construction skills for match play
