Half-Court Groundstroke Consistency Game
This rallying drill builds accuracy, control, and consistency in groundstrokes. Players work in pairs, restricted to half the court, and score points based on rally outcomes. The format develops patience, precision, and depth while providing flexibility for different age groups and skill levels.
Setup
- Two players positioned on opposite ends of the half court (alley or crosscourt)
- Play restricted to the designated half of the court
- Option: Use service line or foam balls for younger players
Rules & Objectives
- Player A begins the rally by feeding the ball into play
- Players rally cooperatively, with all shots required to land in the half court area
- If an error occurs, the point ends
- The same player initiates play for five points in a row, then the serve switches to the other player
- Continue until one player reaches 21 points
Repetition
- Start rallies from the service line for beginners or juniors
- Use foam balls to give players more setup time
- Advanced variation: Rally from the baseline using only half court
- Add a rope across the net at ~5 feet to encourage higher net clearance for depth and safety
Coaching Points
- Reinforces groundstroke accuracy within limited space
- Builds consistency and patience in rallies
- Improves footwork and court positioning
- Adaptable for both juniors and advanced players
