Groundstroke Self-Feed Drill
This drill develops control, timing, and consistency in forehand and backhand groundstrokes. Players practice self-feeding balls, focusing on clean contact at the peak of the bounce and directing shots down the line toward a target. The sequence reinforces proper footwork, positioning, and balance, while variations allow practice with different spin types or shot directions.
Setup
- Players line up behind the baseline with three balls in their non-hitting hand
- A target area is marked down the line
- Players rotate after completing their sequence
Rules & Objectives
- Player 1 self-feeds the first ball and hits it down the line toward the target
- Player 1 moves to the middle, self-feeds the second ball, lets it bounce, and strikes it at the peak of the bounce
- Player 1 repeats with the third ball, again hitting down the line
- After finishing, Player 1 exits to the side and rejoins the line
- Player 2 may begin their sequence once Player 1 reaches their second or third shot to keep the drill moving
Repetition
- Continue until all players have completed multiple rounds
- Alternate between forehands and backhands
- Add variations:
- Use only topspin strokes
- Use only flat strokes
- Alternate spin types
- Replace first and last strokes with crosscourt targets
Coaching Points
- Reinforces proper contact point in front of the body
- Improves consistency and accuracy on self-fed balls
- Trains footwork and balance during repeated groundstrokes
- Builds adaptability with spin and direction variations
