Game Opening

This drill focuses on using the forehand to open points with control and patience. By starting with exchanges through the middle channel, players learn to build rallies with consistency before moving the ball wide or attacking. This reinforces disciplined shot placement while developing strength and reliability in the forehand. Once the initial pattern is completed, players transition into point play, making the drill both technical and competitive.

Setup

  • Two markers are placed to define the “middle channel” on each side of the court
  • Two players start on opposite baselines
  • The coach may feed or serve the first ball to begin the rally

Rules & Objectives

  • Players rally forehands through the middle channel for a minimum of two consecutive shots
  • Once the required number of exchanges has been completed, the point becomes live
  • Players may then direct the ball wide, use angles, or attack to finish the point
  • The sequence is repeated, with players alternating who receives the first ball

Repetition

  • Increase the number of required middle-channel shots (e.g., 4 instead of 2)
  • Begin the sequence with a coach-fed ball or a serve to simulate match play
  • Track points to add a competitive element

Coaching Points

  • Builds forehand consistency and patience at the start of rallies
  • Reinforces disciplined shot placement before attacking
  • Trains players to transition smoothly from neutral play to offense
  • Simulates realistic point-opening scenarios
