Forehand & Backhand Focus Rally
This warm-up drill builds consistency and control by isolating one stroke at a time. Players rally in pairs, focusing only on forehands or only on backhands. This helps players groove their technique, develop accuracy in mini-tennis, and sharpen timing before moving into full-court play. It also encourages repetition of specific strokes, making it an ideal warm-up before competitive practice or match play.
Setup
- Divide players into pairs (1 & 3 together, 2 & 4 together)
- Use half-court or mini-tennis areas to keep rallies controlled
- No additional equipment beyond rackets, balls, and court
Rules & Objectives
- Pair 1 hits only forehands, while their partner (Pair 3) hits only backhands
- Rally back and forth in the service boxes (mini-tennis)
- After 2–3 minutes, switch roles so the other player hits only forehands and the partner only backhands
- Repeat with the second pair (2 & 4)
- Keep rallies going with regular groundstrokes—volleys are not allowed at first
- Optionally, shift to crosscourt rallies after players are comfortable
Repetition
- Start with 2–3 minute rallies, then switch roles
- Progress from mini-tennis to baseline rallies
- Add a competitive element: play mini-games to 7 points using underhand feeds. Winners can rotate to face other winners
Coaching Points
- Improves stroke consistency (forehand and backhand)
- Reinforces technique through high repetition
- Builds rhythm and timing in a controlled environment
- Encourages accuracy before moving into full-speed rallies
