Forehand and Backhand Volley Rotation Game
This drill is a competitive doubles-style game that sharpens net play, reflexes, and teamwork. By rotating pairs after each rally, players stay engaged while practicing both forehand and backhand volleys under pressure. It encourages quick reactions, maintaining a low stance, and moving forward just as in a real doubles point.
Setup
- Three doubles pairs (6 players total)
- Two pairs start at the service line on each side of the net
- Third pair waits at the net post next to the coach/feeder
- Coach with a basket of balls for feeds
Rules & Objectives
- Coach feeds a ball to start the rally
- Two pairs at the net play out a competitive doubles-style point
- After each point:Losing pair rotates off and is replaced by the waiting pair
- Winning pair remains but switches sides to practice both positions
- Coach alternates feeds to each side to restart points
- Continue until all pairs have rotated through multiple rounds
Repetition
- Play “best of 3” format: pair must win 3 points to stay on
- Add scoring (e.g., tally wins for each pair)
- Increase feed speed or mix in lobs to challenge net coverage
Coaching Points
- Improves forehand and backhand volley technique
- Builds quick reflexes and decision-making at the net
- Reinforces doubles teamwork and positioning
