First Serve Pressure & Return Practice
This drill trains both server and returner to handle the intensity of a strong first serve. The server practices applying pressure with two first serves and a backup second serve if needed, while the returner develops consistency against aggressive serving. By playing out points with a scoring system, both players simulate match conditions and refine tactical decision-making under pressure.
Setup
- Two players (server and returner) on a singles court
- Basket of balls for serving
- Standard singles scoring format to 11 points
Rules & Objectives
- Server begins the sequence with two first serves available per point
- If both first serves miss, they use a second serve
- Server and returner play out the point after the serve
- Each point counts as one on the scorecard
- Server alternates serving sides: one point from the deuce court, one point from the ad court
- After two points, roles switch—the returner becomes the server
- Continue alternating until one player reaches 11 points
Repetition
- Repeat the drill with multiple sets to build endurance
- Add conditions such as “returner must aim crosscourt” or “server must serve wide
- ”For variation, extend scoring to a tie-break format (first to 7 with two-point lead)
- Increase realism by using match-style rules (single first serve for pressure)
Coaching Points
- Server: builds rhythm and confidence in first serve accuracy
- Returner: improves reaction and timing against aggressive serves
- Both: develop tactical awareness in serve/return battles
- Simulates real match conditions with point-based scoring
- Enhances mental toughness under serve pressure situations
