Drop Shot Drill
This drill develops quick movement, stamina, and footwork discipline while teaching players how to use the drop shot effectively. By combining baseline touches with cooperative rallies in the service boxes, players improve their ability to recover, maintain balance, and execute soft, controlled shots under pressure. The progression into competitive points adds tactical awareness and builds confidence using the drop shot in match play.
Setup
- Two players positioned at the service line (T-line) on opposite sides of the court
- One tennis ball per rally
- Full court available for movement
Rules & Objectives
- Players begin rallying cooperatively in the service boxes
- After each shot, both players must run back to touch the baseline before returning to the service line to hit the next ball
- Continue the pattern, maintaining consistency in the rally
- As players improve, introduce the drop shot as a winning tactic when switching to competitive points
Repetition
- Start with cooperative rallies to establish rhythm
- Add restrictions, such as using only forehands or only backhands
- Transition into competitive point play, where players can win rallies with a well-placed drop shot
- Increase intensity by shortening the time allowed to touch the baseline and return
Coaching Points
- Builds footwork speed and recovery habits
- Trains players to stay light on their feet and cover more court
- Reinforces proper drop shot technique (loose grip, short backswing, soft hands, and backspin)
- Improves stamina, movement economy, and tactical use of drop shots
