Drills to Improve Your Tennis Serve
This progressive drill is designed for beginner and intermediate players to build proper serving mechanics step by step. By starting with simple self-feeds and gradually moving toward the overhead serve, players learn control, timing, and coordination in manageable stages. The drill emphasizes smooth progression from groundstrokes to the full serve, ensuring fundamentals are developed before adding power.
Setup
- Players lined up along the baseline
- Each player with a racquet and several balls
- Optional cones or markers on the opposite court as targets
Rules & Objectives
- Progression 1: Self-feed by bouncing the ball and hitting a forehand or backhand
- Progression 2: Self-feed at waist height (no bounce) and hit a forehand
- Progression 3: Self-feed at shoulder height (no bounce) and hit a forehand
- Progression 4: Practice the overhead serve starting with the racquet behind the neck
- Repeat the sequence until players are comfortable with each stage
Repetition
- Players cycle through the progressions multiple times
- Add targets in the service box or court corners to encourage accuracy
- Increase pace and consistency as players advance
- Transition into rally-based serve practice once mechanics are stable
