Down-the-Line to Crosscourt Passing Shot

This drill teaches players to set up and execute effective passing shots by combining controlled down-the-line rallies with a sudden change of direction. The goal is to practice accuracy, consistency, and the ability to recognize the right moment to hit a crosscourt passing shot against an opponent at the net.

Setup

  • One player at the baseline
  • One player (or coach) at the service line, acting as the net player
  • Basket of balls for feeding
  • Target zone marked crosscourt near the service line for the passing shot

Rules & Objectives

  • Coach (or service-line player) feeds balls to the baseline player
  • Baseline player must hit three consecutive shots down the line to the service-line player
  • The service-line player volleys each ball back to the baseline player
  • On the fourth shot, the baseline player changes direction and hits a crosscourt passing shot, aiming for the target area near the service line
  • Reset and repeat the sequence
  • After several rounds, switch sides so players practice both forehand and backhand passing setups

Repetition

  • Standard: 3 down-the-line + 1 crosscourt sequence
  • Increase difficulty: require longer setups (e.g., 5 down-the-line before crosscourt)
  • Add competitive scoring:
  • 1 point for each successful down-the-line rally shot
  • 2 points for a clean crosscourt passing shot
  • Progress to live points where the net player actively tries to cut off the passing shot

Coaching Points

  • Builds consistency on controlled down-the-line groundstrokes
  • Trains decision-making and tactical awareness for when to attack
  • Sharpens crosscourt passing accuracy under pressure
  • Reinforces footwork and preparation for sudden changes in direction
  • Provides realistic practice for breaking down net players in match play
