Crosscourt Setup, Down-the-Line Attack
This advanced drill trains players to recognize opportunities for attacking down the line after establishing a crosscourt rally. Starting with controlled exchanges, players must maintain consistency for a set number of shots before choosing the right moment to change direction. The exercise sharpens tactical awareness, footwork, and shot selection under pressure, making it ideal for developing point construction strategies used in competitive play.
Setup
- Two players positioned on the baseline
- Singles court (optional: include doubles alley for advanced variation)
- Coach with a basket of balls to initiate rallies, or players can self-feed
Rules & Objectives
- Players begin a crosscourt baseline rally
- They must sustain at least four consecutive crosscourt shots (adjustable by coach)
- After the required rally shots, either player may choose to attack down the line
- Players continue the point live—attacker can either go for a winner or approach the net
- Restart rallies with a feed from the coach or by self-feeding
- Alternate sides of the court so players practice both forehand and backhand setups
Repetition
- Adjust the rally length before attack (e.g., 2, 4, 6, or more shots)
- For higher intensity, add scoring (e.g., first to 11 or 21 points)
- Switch the pattern: start with down-the-line rallies, then transition into crosscourt attacks
- Add situational scoring: bonus points for successful down-the-line winners or net approaches
Coaching Points
- Builds patience and consistency during crosscourt exchanges
- Trains tactical awareness for when to change direction
- Improves footwork for setting up inside-out and down-the-line shots
- Reinforces point construction strategies commonly used in advanced match play
