Crosscourt & Down-the-Line Exchange

This classic volley drill develops quick hands, sharp reflexes, and disciplined footwork. By requiring players to volley only crosscourt or only down the line, the drill reinforces control, placement, and body positioning. It’s effective for both singles and doubles players, helping them stay balanced and aggressive at the net.

Setup

  • 4 players (2 on each side)
  • All players positioned just inside or in front of the service line
  • Standard court, racquets, and balls

Rules & Objectives

  • Begin with both pairs volleying crosscourt only (deuce side vs deuce side, ad side vs ad side)
  • After a set time or rally, switch to down-the-line volleys only
  • Players must:Keep racquet above the waist
  • Make contact in front of the body
  • Bend knees and step slightly forward on contact
  • Progress to variations where one player always volleys crosscourt and the other always volleys down the line
  • Rally continues until a mistake is made—then restart

Repetition

  • Run timed sets (e.g., 2–3 minutes per variation)
  • Add conditioning: the player who misses does 20 push-ups or burpees
  • Progress to alternating patterns (crosscourt, then down-the-line)
  • Challenge players to maintain long rallies for consistency

Coaching Points

  • Improves volley technique and control
  • Builds quick reactions and footwork at the net
  • Reinforces correct positioning (contact out front, no backing up)
  • Prepares players for doubles exchanges and net-rush situations
