Channel Target Consistency Drill
This drill emphasizes placement, control, and endurance by requiring players to hit consistently into defined channels. One player acts as a moving target, shifting between channels after each shot, while the other must direct the ball precisely back into the correct channel. This creates a dynamic challenge that forces players to adjust footwork and shot selection while maintaining accuracy. By adding movement and variation, the drill builds consistency under pressure and improves tactical awareness.
Setup
- Court is divided into three channels:
- Channel 1 – between the sideline and the first marker
- Channel 2 – the middle section between markers
- Channel 3 – the opposite sideline channel between marker and line
- Two players are positioned on opposite baselines. One player is designated as the moving target
Rules & Objectives
- Coach or player feeds the first ball to start the rally
- The moving target shifts between channels after each shot
- The hitter must always direct the ball into the channel where the moving target currently stands
- If the moving target switches to a new channel, the hitter must adjust and aim for that new target area
- Continue the rally for as long as possible, focusing on control and accuracy
Repetition
- Extend rally length to increase endurance
- Allow channels to be widened (e.g., including doubles alleys) for lower-level players
- Shrink channels for advanced players to demand greater precision
- Rotate roles so both players practice as the hitter and the moving target
Coaching Points
- Builds placement consistency and directional control
- Improves footwork and reaction time under changing conditions
- Trains players to adapt quickly to shifting targets
- Increases endurance and concentration during long rallies
