Beginner Rally Points Drill
This drill teaches adult beginners how to maintain rally consistency while adding a scoring system that rewards both shot-making and winning points. Players rally from the baseline, with each shot increasing the value of the point. The format encourages focus, accuracy, and controlled play, while keeping practice competitive and engaging.
Setup
- Two players start at the baseline
- Coach feeds the first ball to begin the rally
- Additional players wait on the sideline to rotate in
Rules & Objectives
- The coach feeds a ball to start the rally
- Players rally from the baseline
- Each shot that lands in play adds 1 point to the value of the rally
- Example: If the rally lasts 4 shots before an error, the winner earns 4 points
- The maximum number of points a player can earn in one rally is 10
- If a player hits a clean winner, they automatically earn 3 points, plus the rally points accumulated
- The losing player rotates off, and the next player from the sideline comes in
- The winner stays on court and continues playing as “king of the court
- ”
Repetition
- Play continuously for 15–20 minutes
- At the end, compare total points collected by each player
- Encourage players to sustain rallies, as longer rallies make each point more valuable

- Encourages controlled aggression when opportunities arise
