Baseline-to-Net Transition Doubles
This doubles drill helps adult players develop the crucial skill of transitioning from the baseline to the net as a team. It trains players to recognize short balls, step in with an approach shot, and move forward with their partner to control the net. By rewarding awareness and coordinated movement, this drill builds match-ready doubles instincts and helps players gain confidence attacking the net.
Setup
- Two teams of two players (red team vs. black team)
- All four players begin at the baseline
- Use drop-hit feeds to start each rally
- Play in sets of 5 points before switching roles
Rules & Objectives
- Red team begins with a drop hit to start the rally
- Play continues until one team hits a short ball that lands inside the service line
- The receiving team must step in with an approach shot and move both players forward to the net
- The point is then played out with one team attacking from the net and the other defending from the baseline
- Continue until 5 points are played, then switch so the other team starts the next round
- Repeat until both teams have had equal opportunities starting rallies and attacking short balls
Repetition
- After each set of 5 points, rotate roles
- Add scoring to make it competitive (e.g., first team to 15 points)
- Restrict baseline defenders to lobs or passing shots for tactical training
- For advanced players, start with a live serve instead of a drop feed
Coaching Points
- Trains recognition of short balls and quick transition forward
- Builds doubles teamwork and synchronized movement to the net
- Improves approach shots, volleys, and finishing at the net
- Teaches defenders to respond with effective lobs or passing shots
- Simulates realistic doubles situations adults encounter in matches
